In episode 2, Kamala and Bruno decide to investigate the bracelet’s (called the bangle) true power and extent after learning of its potential.
The two believe Kamala can truly be a superhero if she can control it and harness it. Bruno realizes during the trials that Kamala’s core, rather than the bangle, is where the powers originate. We’re not entirely sure how he measures this power coming from her, but just go with it. As she practices, Kamala is able to take more control over the power and create different shapes and longer lasting manifestations of her power.
Meanwhile the show also keeps to its teenage coming of age story, as a new boy at school named Kamran catches Kamala’s eye (what about Bruno!). Kamala ends up getting to know the young man as she and her friends (Bruno and Nakia) attend a popular kids party that is shut down by the police. Let’s say that Kamala has a crush and Bruno isn’t pleased.
The episode also discusses some sensitive topics around the Partition, a highly emotional topic of shared history and culture between India and Pakistan, which is brought up during a delicate conversation at the Khans’ home.
Back at school, a newly confident Kamala (I mean she has super powers!) is enjoying being the unknown superhero that everyone is talking about – even if she and Bruno agree the name Night Light is just terrible. She also learns more about the origins of the bangle, which go back to her great grandmother, Aisha, who is something of a black sheep in the family.
Kamala puts her emerging powers to good use during a community event, when a young boy ends up hanging out of a window of nearby building. She saves his life and further reveals herself to the world. As she prepares to head home, she is accosted by members of the DODC (Department of Damage Control) that seems to be on the hunt for new supers. She escapes with the help of Kamran, who introduces her to his mother, who says she has been waiting a long time to meet Kamala. Hmmmmmm!
