It’s almost time for the next Disney Plus series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first of 2022. At the end of March, MCU fans will get to stream the new Moon Knight series.
Who is Moon Knight?
In the comics, Moon Night (aka Marc Spector) is a former Marine and CIA operative. He becomes a mercenary, despite having some inner conflicts about violence and morality. During a mission in Egypt, Spector is mortally wounded saving the life of an archaeologist.
He dies, but is revived by the power of an Egyptian god named Khonshu, who has chosen him to be the ‘moon knight’. Using his newfound powers, he redeems his life of violence by protecting and avenging the innocent. In the comics, it is initially questionable whether any of the mystical powers are real or just a manifestation of Spectors dissociative identity disorder. For most of the stories, he has no real supernatural powers, but in others he does.
What do we Know About the Series?
Moon Knight will star Oscar Isaac in the lead role, as Steven Grant an awkward store employee who learns that he actually has dissociative identity disorder, sharing his body with another identity, a mercenary named Marc Spector.
Repercussions from Spector’s life will come crashing into Grant’s reality. It leads Spector/Grant to uncover a deadly mystery involving the ancient gods of Egypt. At some point, we assume following an encounter with one of the ancient beings, Spector/Grant takes on another identity, as the mythical Moon Knight.
The trailer gives us a quick look at enough scenes to confirm this much of the story, but the rest is ambiguous. Moon Knight definitely seems to have some certain supernatural powers. In one he looks like he is fighting some sort of monster. So, we can likely expect more focus on the supernatural aspect of the character.
Where will Moon Knight fit into the larger MCU? That’s still anyone’s guess. Unlike the other Disney Plus MCU series to date, his is an entirely new character intro.
We’ll see more of that in 2022 with She-Hulk and Ms, Marvel, so it will be interesting to see how Moon Knight and these other new characters are both introduced and then leveraged in the larger MCU story.
