One of the best hit mini drama series to come to HBO is Mare of Easttown, starring Kate Winslet and Evan Peters. It premiered earlier this year in 2021 with a total of seven episodes and has received 16 Emmy nominations as well.
What’s It About?
In a small Pennsylvania town near Philadelphia, we meet Mare Sheehan, local police detective. It’s the kind of town where everybody knows everybody. In fact, if there’s a crime, you most likely know who already did it. It doesn’t make things great for Mare to go about her daily life when she’s the one doing most of the arresting.
In addition to her job, Mare seems to be struggling in her personal life. She lives with her mother and young daughter, as well as her grandson, in a post-divorce life from her ex-husband who lives across the street and is getting remarried. We learn Mare’s son is the father of her grandson, but he recently passed away from suicide. Something Mare is having a hard time coming to terms with.
Mare has been getting flack for not having solved the case of a missing girl from over a year ago. We start off with her getting hit with another case when another local girl turns up dead in the river.
We watch Mare juggle the many twists and turns of the murder case and personal relationships in her small community as she tries to hold herself together.
Watch It Or Not?
Kate Winslet delivers one of her best performances in this mini series. If you’re a Winslet fan, I recommend watching it on that premise alone. Evan Peters does make a really good partner detective as well and it was entertaining to watch them work together and get closer considering how different in personalities they are.
Overall though, I would rate this very high in terms of crime/detective entertainment. The writers did a really great job and leading you one way, only to throw multiple curve balls your way and keep you surprised.
