Make Room for Love in "A Nice Indian Boy"
- Apr 30, 2025
"A Nice Indian Boy" brings together an impressive cast to create a touching exploration of family, love, and acceptance. The film has a unique charm brought to life by "Hamilton" star Jonathan Groff and comedienne Zarna Garg in her feature film debut. It also gives Karan Soni, known for his role in "Deadpool," and Sunita Mani the opportunity to transcend their typical roles and portray richly developed characters in this heartfelt narrative.
The story begins with the semi-arranged marriage of Arundhathi Gavaskar and Manish, which brings joy to their parents. But an undercurrent of tension lies beneath the festivities as Arundhathi's brother, Naveen, struggles with his sexual orientation and his culture's expectations of him. When he meets Jay Kurundkar, a photographer with a deep affinity for Indian culture, Naveen is forced to confront his feelings for the first time.
The film beautifully portrays the struggles of acceptance, not only from a romantic perspective but also within one's self and family. The layers of cultural and personal tensions make for a compelling narrative that promises not only romantic entanglement but a deeper look into characters’ growth and development.

Screenwriters Eric Randall and Madhuri Shekar successfully avoid the typical romance tropes and give us authentic characters with genuine connections and shared experiences, which ultimately makes the film's journey towards understanding and reconciliation all the more meaningful.
"A Nice Indian Boy" cleverly uses humor and heart to communicate important messages about love, acceptance, and the importance of being true to yourself.
