We just finished binging Season 2 of Netflix’s Locke & Key. Check out our mostly spoiler-free review. We strongly recommend watching Season 1, before reading this article and definitely before watching Season 2.

Where Does it Come From?

Locke & Key comes from a graphic novel series of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodgriguez. It centers on the three youngest members of the Locke family, as they return to their ancestral home after a family tragedy. The three young Lockes soon learn that Key House has plenty of secrets for them to discover, including the fact that magic exists and the family acts as keepers of a set of magical keys with extraordinary powers.

Who is this show for?

The show is rated TV-14 (similar to PG 13 for movies). This means it is designed for ages 14+, but may be fine for younger viewers as well. For comparison’s sake, it is probably a bit less scary than Stranger Things. While it may be aimed at the teen age market, there is plenty to interest the grown-ups as well.

Last Time on Locke & Key (aka what happened in Season 1?)

In Season 1, we met the Locke family as they moved into Key House following the death of their father. Not long after moving in, they begin to discover the secrets of the house and their family legacy of magic keys. We also learn that adults can’t remember the magic, so the powers of the keys are only open to the Locke children (one older teen – Tyler, one younger teen – Kinsey, and one pre-teen – Bode) and the friends they decide to share the secrets with.

We also begin learning the story of the previous generation of Locke’s, led by their father, and how he and his friends faced extreme dangers because of the keys. Not surprisingly, things get dangerous for our new generation of Locke’s as well, once a demon named Dodge escapes from where it had been imprisoned by the previous Locke’s and their friends. Thus begins the new battle with Dodge to control the power of the keys.

After numerous harrowing adventures and battles, the Locke’s defeat Dodge and send it through the portal back into its own world. Of course, viewers know better. Dodge had outsmarted the Locke’s and taken on a new identity as one of the Locke family friends, Gabe. The season ended with Dodge/Gabe and Demon possessed Eden making plans to lay low for a bit before taking the keys away from the Lockes.

What’s Season 2 About?

The second season picks up a few months after the end of Season 1. Dodge/Gabe has insinuated itself into the Locke family through Kinsey and Bode and is working toward the ultimate goal of obtaining the keys and defeating the Lockes.

Uncle Duncan plays a larger role in Season 2, as the kids begin coming to grips with the fact that they will all forget about magic when they turn 18. We also meet some new characters, providing a new romantic interest for Mrs. Locke and a new friend for Bode.

We’ll get introduced to new keys with new powers and learn about how the keys came to be in the first place. The season is exciting along the lines of the previous and also does a good job of completing the current story, while keeping the door open for new adventures.

Watch it or Not?

If you liked Season 1, the answer is a definitive – Yes.  If you haven’t seen Locke & Key before, but are fans of shows like Stranger Things, Sabrina, and others on Netflix, then this should be high on your watch ilst,

Will there be a Season 3?

Yes indeed. Netflix has given the green light to Season 3 of Locke & Key. So, we can expect the story to pick up more or less where things left off after the finale of Season 2. While no release date has been announced, we can likely assume a later 2022 premier.
