Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story (2024) — Documentary Review

Bruce David Klein's documentary, Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story, paints a vivid portrait of Liza Minnelli - the veteran performer whose audience adoration is as much a part of her as the affection she showers on them. Minnelli's life bears the marks of trials and tribulations, including health woes, but her resilient spirit refuses to be vanquished.

Beginning with a whirlwind collage of magazine spreads and snippets paired with effusive laudations from notable admirers, Klein's film barely retreats from veneration. It does, however, shed light on the complexities associated with Minnelli’s high-profile life - a life filled with constant comparisons to her famous mother, Judy Garland, short-lived love affairs, failed marriages, and battles with addiction. This is not mere hero worship; Minnelli's substantial heart and spirit permeate the film.

At the heart of the film is the gratitude Minnelli expresses for the five mentors who were instrumental in shaping her successful career. One of these mentors was Kay Thompson, who supported the 23-year-old Minnelli during a vulnerable time after her mother’s death. French singer-songwriter Charles Aznavour was another key mentor, teaching Minnelli how to bring authenticity to music by singing from the heart.

Bob Fosse, Fred Ebb, and Halston are the other three titans who significantly impacted Minnelli’s career. As a director, Fosse shaped her acting skills, while Ebb, a musical theater lyricist, was a dear friend and wise counsel. Fashion designer Halston gave Minnelli her signature look.

The documentary delves into Minnelli's relationships and addiction struggles through conversations with her friends and colleagues. The exclusion of her non-musical roles and the central role of the queer community in her fandom are a slight oversight. Regardless, Klein's film offers a heartfelt, celebration-filled, and unmistakably genuine tribute to a remarkable Broadway legend.
