In the Land of Saints and Sinners (2024) — Movie Review

Liam Neeson's career sees a refreshing turn with his latest film, 'In the Land of Saints and Sinners,’ directed by Robert Lorenz. This new offering presents a change from the action-packed roles Neeson has been known for, and it reunites him with the more drama-oriented side of his acting range.

Set in Ireland during the tumultuous period known as The Troubles, the film channels the essence of an existential Western narrative. Neeson plays the character of Finbar Murphy, an assassin with a moral compass and a penchant for planting trees over his victims' graves.

Though the narrative can meander and the pacing may slack at times, Neeson delivers a solid performance backed by an excellent supporting cast including Irish greats like Colm Meaney and Ciaran Hinds. The villainesque role of an IRA terrorist named Doireann McCann, played by Oscar-nominated Kerry Condon, also stands out.

The film's predictability can sometimes hamper the tension and stakes, a problem which Lorenz's directing sometimes struggles to overcome. However, 'In the Land of Saints and Sinners’ excels in showcasing the performances of its top-tier cast. Neeson's performance, in particular, sketches a man struggling with his past actions but who has found a way to make peace with them.

While the themes of religion, sin, and redemption could have been more fully explored to aid during narrative sags, the movie's strength lies in its brilliant casting and the allure of the Irish setting. 'In the Land of Saints and Sinners' may not delve deeply below its surface narrative, but its strong character work and captivating backdrop of Northern Ireland might revitalize your faith in Neeson's future roles.
