Meet the Barbarians (2024) - Movie Review

Acclaimed for her work in multiple genres, Julie Delpy shines a fresh light on the refugee crisis through her latest film, 'Meet the Barbarians'. A political satire, the movie portrays a peaceful Breton village reluctantly opening its doors to a Syrian refugee family. Despite its humorous undertone, revealed through the naiveté and prejudice of its inhabitants, the film carries a significant underlying message. It acknowledges the fear and bias refugees face, while also demonstrating the potential benefits of cultural integration for both the displaced individuals and their host community.

Delpy stars as Joëlle, a progressive schoolteacher who initiates efforts to settle Ukrainian refugees in Paimpoint, Brittany. When Ukrainians prove scarce, the village welcomes Syrian refugees, causing an uproar among its narrow-minded locals. The satirical element springs from the locals' comical responses to their new neighbors, inadvertently becoming the "barbarians" of the movie title.

Meet the Barbarians (2024) - Movie Review

The refugees are portrayed as a well-educated family trying to rebuild their lives post-Bashar al-Assad’s devastating war. Despite facing rampant xenophobia, they strive to assimilate into the local community. Contrasting with the stereotyped French characters depicting prejudice and moral weakness, Delpy's refugees emerge as relatable figures, resonating as real people.

Despite the comedic route taken by Delpy, comedy does not emerge as the film's strong suit. As a director, Delpy focuses more on highlighting societal ignorance towards immigrants. Although broad satire has been used, 'Meet the Barbarians' primarily emerges as a movie about hope, sending across a strong signal for empathy and unity amidst fear and prejudice. Despite its overbearing nature and occasional incredulity, the film succeeds in revealing how oppressed immigrants and their hosts can mutually benefit from embracing inclusivity.
