John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA (2024) — Series Review

John Mulaney, best known for his childhood stories and stand-up act, now presents a weeklong special event titled, "John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA". Currently, Los Angeles serves as his dwelling and the home to Netflix's comedy festival, Netflix Is a Joke. The show combines studio segments, pre-taped sketches, and man-on-the-street interviews, providing a whimsical window into Los Angeles's variable landscapes.

From the get-go, Mulaney set the tone, saying the show with only six episodes, "will never hit its groove". Uncertainties such as sound issues and hurried closures only amplified the show's charm, as it juggled between showcasing local stories and presenting global celebrities.

Charmed by LA's diverse nature, Mulaney promises an outsider's perspective with keen observational humor. The city's paradoxical essence organically collaborates with Mulaney's long-standing themes such as true crime, creating a series that presents a unique Los Angeles experience.

John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA (2024) — Series Review

Mulaney’s past ventures before the pandemic included “The Sack Lunch Bunch,” a quirky children’s sketch special. Given his high-profile divorce and struggles with substance abuse, last year’s “Baby J” had a semi-confessional tone. However, in “Everybody’s in LA,” Mulaney returns to more familiar and comfortable territory, presenting personal narratives with modest charm.

The studio for "Everybody's in L.A." resonates with 70s visual aesthetics, resembling the sets of legendary chat-show hosts like Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett. Amidst a changing landscape where conventional talk shows are fading, Mulaney's talk show delivers an endearing twist to the medium. It novelty lies in the unique fusion of past classics and contemporary tales.

Mulaney keeps the show lively and intact with rich content, drawing in elements of corporate synergy and handling sensitive topics with tact and humor. The first episode now available for streaming on Netflix, with subsequent episodes broadcast live from May 6-10 at 7pm PT, skillfully pulls together people and stories in a charming fusion that only Mulaney could turn into a must-watch.
