I.S.S (2024) - Movie Review

The gripping thriller, "I.S.S", set inside the American/Russian International Space Station, highlights the chilling reality of space life. It uncovers the fear that isn't just about screams not being heard in space, but whispers that may be overheard. This gut-wrenching movie spares no moment of its tight 90-minute runtime, building tension and suspense with each passing scene.

The movie sets the stage like an intricate Jenga tower, with each line of dialogue laying groundwork for a tense and horrifying future. The last hour delivers non-stop danger and fluctuating alliances. Despite knowing the impact of every shred of information or lack thereof, audiences will find themselves ensnared, awaiting to see how events unfold.

The film boats an impressive ensemble featuring Chris Messina, Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, and Tony winner John Gallagher, Jr. representing the American crew, with Masha Mashkova (“For All Mankind”), Costa Ronin (“The Americans”), and Pilou Asbæk (“Game of Thrones”) as the Russian crew. Moreover, Geoff Wallace's top-notch production design and astounding visual effects that depict the crew floating about in the space station, add another dimension of intrigue to the movie.

"I.S.S", similar to "Alien", immediately thrusts its audience into a sense of discomfort, by confining its characters in an area far from Earth. We follow a newcomer, scientist Kira (DeBose), as she acquainted with her colleagues within this extra-terrestrial environment, which allows her, and subsequently us, to meet the other astronauts and observe life in zero gravity.

The film eases us into the intense tension to follow, by dropping subtle hints during the initial introduction phase. “The low hum you’re hearing, that’s our life support,” the American commanding officer, Gordon Barrett (Messina), quietly tells Kira. A compelling insight into the dynamics of the space station unfolds as Kira gets to know her colleagues across cultural differences.

The film takes a dark turn when the crew witnesses what first appears to be a volcanic eruption, but instead evolves into terrifying global destruction. Barrett receives a cryptic order to seize control of the space station “by any means necessary,” but to keep it a secret. Chances are, the Russian crew received the same command.

"I.S.S" shows how the friendly atmosphere disappears when each crew member faces a choice of loyalty and trust – both crucial for survival. The stakes escalate when the station's support system wavers, and vital Earth-communications break down. The shifting alliances and failing technology sets a thrilling and relentless pace that keeps viewers riveted to every tense moment.
