Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell (2024) - Movie Review

In Pham Thien An's melancholy creation "Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell", the line between surrealism and realism becomes more and more blurred in Thien's subdued pursuit of meaning and purpose amidst a heartbreaking situation. Thien, portrayed by Le Phong Vu, is a resident of Saigon who makes a living as a wedding videographer and revels in leisurely times with his comrades. The sudden death of his sister-in-law in a motorcycle accident pushes him to step into the role of caretaker for his nephew Dao, played by Nguyen Thinh. This unfortunate circumstance pushes him to revisit his country roots for the funeral and to introduce Dao to his extended family.

As he embarks on this journey to locate his estranged brother, he finds himself engrossed in profound dialogues about faith and mortality. His dreams become increasingly frequent during the trip, further blending the realms of reality and fantasy.

This visually stunning debut feature, which earned the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature at the historic Cannes Film Festival, is a thoughtful expedition into rural Vietnam’s captivating beauty. Pham Thien An's steady storytelling and Dinh Duy Hung's meticulous cinematography conjure an ethereal quality that enhances the narrative.

Inside The Yellow Cocoon Shell (2024) - Movie Review

"Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell" encourages audience members to fill the narrative's silences with their own reflections, inviting them to co-create this absorbing cinematic experience. As they journey with Thien, they're enveloped by the humid air and the muddy paths, feeling every minute as it ticks away.

The protagonist’s inner spiritual journey is beautifully reflected through the film’s visual and narrative elements. Notable is the recurring Jesus imagery, yet religion is also subtly represented through characters and situations, serving as a reminder that despite seeming to have abandoned him, it is ever-present.

Though Thien embarks on his journey seeking his brother, the film offers ample scope to appreciate the surrounding beauty and unravel the complexities of reconciling with death and seeking faith's purpose. Finding no definitive closure within “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,” viewers are meant to form their own interpretations of Thien’s introspective journey, making room for individual introspection in their personal quests for spiritual fulfillment.
