Inside Out 2 (2024) — Movie Review

After years of underwhelming releases, Pixar has seemingly hit a stride with their latest theatrical release, "Inside Out 2". Directed by Kelsey Mann, this sequel is a vibrant exploration of individuality, belonging, and the tumultuous journey of being a teenager, despite its predictability.

The story revolves around the optimistic Joy (Amy Poehler) and her gang of emotions including Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, maneuvering the mind of 13-year-old Riley. The film introduces the viewers to fresh challenges faced by Riley, aggravated by the onset of her puberty, and new emotions such as Embarrassment, Ennui, Envy, and Anxiety who embody these Adolescent trials.

Despite its traditional plot, the highlight of 'Inside Out 2' is its heartfelt representation of teenagerhood. It brilliantly illustrates Riley's struggle to impress her idol, Val Ortiz, causing her to discard her older friends and self-identity. The film demonstrates the convoluted process of attempting to fabricate an acceptable persona while suppressing genuine emotions, embodied through the struggle between Joy and Anxiety.

Inside Out 2 (2024) — Movie Review

Despite relying heavily on its comedic elements to carry its predictable plot, the film manages to strike a chord with its audience. However, the sequel could be criticized for utilizing characters of color as supporting props to bolster the growth of the white central character, reflecting an outdated perspective.

Regardless of its flaws, the film brilliantly navigates through the trials of growing up. The movie stands as a testament to the overpowering angst, overwhelming isolation, and challenging changes every teenager experiences. Adults will find themselves laughing and reminiscing about their tumultuous teenage years.

One of the film's most memorable scenes features Riley, freed from the pressure of constant competition, experiencing unadulterated joy as she effortlessly skates across ice, a poignant reminder of pursuing passion simply for the love of it rather than for fleeting gratification. Despite occasional predictability, 'Inside Out 2' is a triumphant return to form for Pixar, balancing gentle humor with a poignant portrayal of adolescence.
