Incoming (2024) - Movie Review

Teen comedies have long chased the dream of crafting the ultimate 'one crazy night' narrative, popularized by films like "Superbad" and "After Hours." This pursuit has enriched cinema, resulting in gems like the hilariously honest "Blockers," the affable "Booksmart," the adrenaline-pumping "Bodies Bodies Bodies," and the thought-provoking "Emergency." Adding to this list is "Incoming," a commendable installment from the creators of "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

"Incoming" stands out with its humorous scripts and bold content that does not tread lightly to please the audience. The movie features very human characters; they're flawed, rough around the edges, sometimes even ill-behaved and oblivious, much like everyday adolescents.

A significant success of "Incoming" lies in its casting, notably Mason Thames as Benjamin “Benj” Nielsen. With his charming presence, he successfully channels the spirit of an ‘80s teen movie star, fitting perfectly into the narrative's universe alongside Ali Gallo and Isabella Ferreira. The storyline takes the characters through awkward crushes, heartbreaks, and struggles with self-image, all leading up to a night of adventure at Koosh’s party.

A standout performer is Bobby Cannavale, who plays the amusingly irresponsibly chemistry teacher Mr. Studebaker, whose actions escalate throughout the movie. However, the teenage characters are at the film's heart-they navigate deceits, heartbreaks, missteps, and take care of their severely intoxicated friend, Katrina, throughout the unforgettable night.

Although humor is at the forefront, the movie doesn't shy away from teaching some hard lessons. Actions have consequences, and whether they're good or bad, everyone gets their due by the end. The only minor disappointment is that the character Benj doesn’t feel the full satisfaction of his arc by the end, leaving audiences wishing he received a bit more closure.

Nonetheless, "Incoming" closes on a positive note, with friendships enduring the chaos of the evening, and the tradition of teen comedies alive and thriving-perhaps the only trophy that truly matters in the end.
