Check out our quick guide to some of the biggest holiday blockbusters heading to theaters or streaming services this holiday season! We have the updated release dates and info you need to figure out your viewing plans.
Dune - October 21, 2021
This one has been getting some solid early reviews as it takes on the task of adapting one of the most famous science fiction novels of all time and adapting it to the big screen. It’s been tried before with questionable results. Will Denis Villeneuve’s version turn out more successful than past adaptations from David Lynch and others? A strong cast will hopefully make this one a stronger take on the iconic sci-fi story. It will be in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
The French Dispatch - October 22, 2021
Filmmaker Wes Anderson returns to theaters with another offbeat vision, featuring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Saorise Ronan, and Timothee Chalamet. It will have a full theatrical release starting on October 22.
Antlers - October 29, 2021
This looks like a weird one, with Guillermo del Toro producing this small-town horror movie.
Eternals - November 5, 2021
The next entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) looks to build on the great success of Shan-Ch and the Legend of the Ten Rings this summer. Trailers are looking good and there should be a lot of excitement when this hits theaters in November. It will likely move to Disney Plus at some point afterward, but this will be a theatrical only release.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife - November 19, 2021
Another Ghostbusters? Yes indeed. Coming from Jason Reitman and starring Paul Rudd, this movie looks to be a direct continuation of the original Ghostbusters series and will feature at least a cameo from Dan Akroyd, among other original series cast members.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City - November 24, 2021
OK, not sure this one will count as a blockbuster, but a new entry into the long-running Resident Evil series seems like a fun one to include. It sounds as if this is really a standalone film, rather than a continuation of the existing series, which is probably a good thing. Check it out in theaters in November.
West Side Story - December 10, 2021
Is there an audience for another remake of the classic West Side Story musical (itself a musical take on Romeo and Juliette). I’m not honestly sure. But, you can see it before Christmas, if this sounds like something that is up your musical alley.
Spider-Man: No Way Home - December 17, 2021
This has the potential to be the biggest holiday movie of the year and a huge release for Sony and Marvel. It is already one of the most talked-about movies of the year, with rumors running rampant about having past Spider-Man actors involved. Let’s just say we’re pretty excited for this one.
The Matrix 4 - December 22, 2021
Right on the heels of Spider-Man, we get a new entry into The Matrix series! Trailers look very cool, so you better believe we will be spending some serious theater time right before Christmas. This one will also be released on HBO Max at the same time.
The King’s Man - December 22, 2021
We’re looking forward to this one as well, but honestly it’s facing some stiff competition from the last two movies on this list. So, we may not see it immediately. But, the first Kingsman movie was a lot of fun and the second was OK.
We have some fun movies to look out for this holiday season!
