Initially skeptical about the continuation of the acclaimed series "Hacks," the third season has impressively defied expectations. The writers have masterfully crafted a storyline that truly stands out amongst the top comedy series of our time. Stellar performances, particularly by Emmy-winner Jean Smart, bring a unique vibrancy to this season. It continues to surprise with a sharp humor that transcends clichés around age, gender, and cancel culture in Hollywood.
Initially, "Hacks" told the story of an aging comedy icon, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), desperately in need of revitalizing her career with the help of a young writer named Ava (Hannah Einbinder). With the advent of the third season, however, we find Deborah enjoying a career-high, laughing off her previous status quo. The season gets particularly interesting when a chance to fill a "Late Night" host spot emerges - a position that Deborah, now detached from Ava, has dreamt of. This leads to the pairing of Deborah and Ava once more, crashing their worlds together, navigating Hollywood politics and making their insecurities more mutually dependent.
Exceptional performances are also seen from the regular supporting cast including Carl Clemons-Hopkins and Megan Stalter. This season's standout, however, is co-creator and writer Paul Downs. As Deborah’s agent Jimmy, Downs seems to echo the voice and intention of the season perfectly.
The brilliance of "Hacks"' third season is its finely tuned balance. The storyline consistently swivels back to the dynamic between Deborah and Ava, preventing a drift into heavy industry-related discussions. Jean Smart's depiction of age-related urgency in Deborah brilliantly counterbalances Ava's character, making us root for Deborah's ambition and her determination to make it to the top.
Continuing its legacy of quick-witted humor, the show never strays into desperate territory for laughs. Jokes naturally emerge from the characters and situations, testament to the impeccable writing. The clever back-and-forth dynamic between Deborah and Ava builds to such an immaculate conclusion that it fundamentally reshapes the future of the series in the minds of viewers. The third season of "Hacks" sets the stage for the anticipation of what comes next meticulously.
