Musical transitions are inevitable, and for the hilariously captivating '90s pop girl group, "Girls5eva", they have progressed from Peacock to Netflix for their third season. This shift is accompanied by a road-trip themed narrative featuring Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Summer (Busy Philipps), and Gloria (Paula Pell). Despite the reduction in episodes and the intrusive presence of new management, the Meredith Scardino-devised show retains its signature rhythm.
In this new season, Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria execute their comeback strategy through the "Returnity Tour". The tour is unique, not funded by a brand or label, but entirely self-sustained and spontaneous. The group maneuvers from gigs to hotels, following the road wherever it leads them, aimed at reclaiming their fame.
Personal developments evolve throughout the tour. Dawn anticipates her second child while Gloria's road trip-engendered promiscuity balances out her past lack of romantic experiences. Wickie's journey towards selflessness continues, and Summer embarks on a journey to self-identity, independent of a man or parental influence.
Despite the transition from Peacock to a Netflix platform, the third season retains its humor and charm. Each of the six episodes sees the group embarking on a new adventure, utilising various stops to build their characters without losing focus. Despite the shorter episode count, the series continues to fascinate with a blend of the familiar humor and intrigue that endeared it to fans initially.
A notable deviation, however, is having the episodes peppered with in-universe references to Netflix shows, seemingly as a prerequisite for the series' continuation on the platform. This excessive reference to other Netflix properties can occasionally disrupt the show's pacing and humor flow.
Although season three has much to offer, it feels truncated due to the lower episode count. Rather than innovate, it largely continues the storylines and character developments begun in season two. This truncated season could potentially be a pilot for season four. Regardless, "Girls5eva" remains a show filled with humor, charm, and memorable musical numbers-they deserve all the seasons they can muster. The complete third season of "Girls5eva" is now streaming on Netflix.
