Challengers (2024) — Movie Review

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, "Challengers" is an engaging drama that showcases a love triangle among tennis pros. Every scene in the film is designed to maximize entertainment, with rapid-fire, dynamic tennis gameplay and relationship turmoil providing a uniquely gripping experience.

Zendaya takes the spotlight as Tashi, a retired teenage tennis pro whose career is cut short due to an injury. Pivoting her focus from the court to management, she represents her husband Art, played by Mike Faist, who is experiencing a personal crisis at the start of the film. Tashi attempts to reignite Art's passion for tennis by encouraging him to enter a low-stakes championship match.

However, this move reveals hidden motives as Patrick (Josh O’Connor), a former friend who fell out with Art due to a romantic entanglement with Tashi, is also participating in the same match. The film presents several flashback scenes revealing the complexities and nuances of the relationships within the trio. The viewers, however, are left to wonder about the motivations and emotions driving the characters and their choices.

"Challengers" offers an exhilarating cinematic treat teeming with spectacularly executed scenes of sport and passionate dynamics of a relationship. With an editing style that ricochets between time periods, the film uniquely deconstructs the evolution of a relationship, much like the classic films "Blue Valentine" and "Two for the Road".

Challengers (2024) — Movie Review

Although "Challengers" may sweep viewers up with its narrative ambition and dizzying flashes between time periods, it does not lose touch with its primary goal - to entertain. Drawing comparison to iconic film stars of the 1940s such as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the film seems to harken back to a time when cinema was unafraid of showcasing adult relationships and sexual dynamics in mainstream storytelling.

Despite its bold narrative choices, "Challengers" manages to bring a sense of novelty and excitement to commercial cinema that tends to avoid tackling adult themes and complexities. The film's leading trio, Zendaya, Faist, and O’Connor deliver commendable performances, embodying the essence of their characters with natural charisma.

The beauty of the film lies in the viewers' outside look onto the characters' lives, allowing them to grasp the power dynamics within the story and how these dynamics mirror real-life situations. From this perspective, the audience can appreciate "Challengers" for its authentic portrayal of giddy uncertainties and concealed advantages in a high-stakes sports setting.

With its devotion to entertaining viewers while simultaneously revealing the complexities of adult relationships, "Challengers" is sure to create waves in cinemas from April 26th.
