Sisi & I (2024) — Movie Review

Empress Elisabeth of Austria is no stranger to the silver screen, with previous films like Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” (2022) featuring Vicky Krieps as the 19th-century royal. These films often portray Elisabeth, known as Sisi, as a woman suffering under the restrictive societal norms of her time. However, the new film “Sisi & I” by director Frauke Finsterwalder offers a modern and unique perspective on the famous empress.

Sharing stylistic elements with “Corsage,” such as anachronisms and a contemporary soundtrack, “Sisi & I” also delves deeper into the court life of the royal household, exploring nuanced characters who supported and served Elisabeth during her reign. One such character is her loyal handmaiden, Countess Irma, poignantly portrayed by actress Sandra Hüller. The film contrasts the seemingly glamorous life at court with the harsh reality of the servitude and emotional turmoil experienced by figures like Irma.

The crux of “Sisi & I” is its exploration of the psychological challenges and power dynamics within the royal court, seen through Irma's perspective. Irma's story, filled with physical and emotional strain, exposes the darker realities of life in the inner circle. Her character also offers a point of connection for the audience, as her journey of finding voice and confidence amid challenging circumstances is universally relatable.

However, one aspect where “Sisi & I” arguably falls short of “Corsage” is its portrayal of Elisabeth herself. The film goes into more depth with background characters like Countess Irma, which allows other actors, like Hüller, to shine. Because of this, “Sisi & I” is less a biographical film about Sisi and more an ensemble drama.

Despite these comparisons, “Sisi & I” holds its own with captivating performances and a multi-dimensional exploration of women's social restrictions during this historical period. It offers a different perspective on Elisabeth's story and provides fresh insight into the women who lived in her shadow. Regardless of its occasional shortcomings, “Sisi & I” offers an engaging narrative and a memorable cinematic experience.
