Exciting Twists and Turns Await in "Customs Frontline"

Last year, Hong Kong's Herman Yau produced a series of stellar action films. Having gained popularity in the 90s with black comedies and true-crime thrillers, Yau now directs action films often centered around a group of hardworking yet beleaguered law enforcement personnel. His recent project, "Customs Frontline", portrays the Hong Kong customs department's battle against international weapons traffickers. This film is noteworthy as it marks Nicholas Tse's debut as the primary action choreographer.

"Customs Frontline", while not as exhilarating as some of Yau's earlier hits like "Moscow Mission" and "Raid on the Lethal Zone", does pack several unpredictable twists. Nicholas Tse plays the role of Chow Ching-lai, a dedicated Customs Officer hot on the trail of a notorious arms dealer, Dr. Raw, played by Amanda Strang. The pursuit is driven by personal motives aligning with professional responsibilities.

In the initial half of "Customs Frontline", Francis Ng as Kwok Chi-keung, the bureau’s stern co-commissioner, brings an intriguing bureaucratic facet to the narrative, while Jacky Cheung as Chow's mercurial boss adds depth with his performance and influence on Chow's character. Deploying a series of eventful turns and pulpy narratives, "Customs Frontline" manages to keep its audience engaged.

Although Tse's performance can be somewhat rigid, it is supplemented by a compelling supporting cast, including Karena Lam as Athena Siu, Cheung’s supportive partner. Yau, the true hero behind "Customs Frontline", displays attention-grabbing detailing in his storytelling, emphasized by brilliant car stunts and exquisite performances, particularly from Cheung. Despite having to meet the expectations of mainland China's vast market, Yau continues to maintain the excitement of his storytelling as witnessed in his 1990s thrillers.

One of the most striking aspects of "Customs Frontline" is its unyielding pace. It is not the most logical or flawless movie, but its speedy progression and audacious execution ensure that audiences remain gripped and entertained.
