Find Me Falling (2024) - Movie Review

In 'Find Me Falling', writer-director Stelana Kliris presents an appealing 90-minute cinematic retreat, whisking viewers off to a picturesque, sunny haven for a rom-com filled with sand, sea, and Mediterranean charm. It narrates the story of individuals embarking on risk-taking adventures and features an Emmy and Grammy winner charming audiences with his soulful performances. Despite its general allure, the film broadcasts a potentially problematic message emphasizing companionship over solo wellbeing.

The narrative centers on New Yorker John Allman (Harry Connick Jr.) who relocates to a secluded shack in a small village on the rustic cliffs of Cyprus. Inescapable is the echo of his past accomplishments as his long-debuted hit single “Girl on the Beach” plays repeatedly on local radio. After an unsuccessful attempt to revive his career, he ditches his luxurious past life. He yet nurses the emotional aftermath of a crushing separation that inspired his career-marking single, and thus becomes a secluded retiree.

Unexpectedly, John's cottage buds on the edge of a notorious suicide spot where despondent individuals leap to their deaths. His wish for a solitary existence of sorrow is interrupted as he has to erect a fence to deter the suicidal, an act which ironically brings him closer to the locals. A secret concerning Melina, the daughter of his old flame, disrupts this peaceful existence and plunges them into uncertainty.

The plot twist is predictable, yet Kliris unfolds it gradually. The mandated 'revelation' scene, though familiar, is delivered with the solemnity worthy of a Greek tragedy. The narrative continues in a predictable fashion, and the third act loads more than it can bear with a sudden catalyst for John's redemption. The film's message of following one's heart may seem encouraging, but is delivered with disappointing regression.

Find Me Falling (2024) - Movie Review

Nonetheless, the movie carries moments of charm where viewers invest emotional concern in the characters. From John's dry humor to the transformation of the female characters into more liberated personalities, the film successfully strikes a balance between humor and drama. The local culture is also beautifully portrayed, infusing the story with authenticity.

Harry Connick Jr. impresses with a witty and heartbroken portrayal of a character not typical in his previous rom-com stints. His mastery of the craft is evident in his musical performances. Angeliki Filipidou shines with an irresistible charisma, grounding the film with her role as the rational voice.

Despite having some appeal, 'Find Me Falling' is another addition to Netflix’s portfolio of adult-targeted rom-coms. It gets by on its cinematic aesthetics, light-heartedness, and high aspirations. Still, it is just another fleeting feel-good experience, contributing to the ever-growing pile of content produced to feed user algorithms.
