Wizards Beyond Waverly Place (2024) - Series Review

The much-anticipated series "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place," a sequel to Disney's iconic "Wizards of Waverly Place," revolves around former wizard Justin Russo, portrayed by David Henrie. Now a vice principal living in Staten Island, Justin, along with his investigative reporter wife, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos) and their sons, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko), lives a seemingly normal life until the arrival of a young wizard disrupts their routine.

The Russo household changes dramatically when Justin’s sister Alex (Selena Gomez reprising her role) seeks his help and introduces the family to the rebellious, quick-thinking wizard, Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). Unaware of his father’s past, Billie’s arrival throws the family into a series of magical misadventures, reigniting a world of wizardry Justin had put behind him.

With significant technological advancements since the first series premiered 17 years ago, the magic depicted in "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place" is more spectacular than ever. Its comedic approach doesn't detract from the series' charm, even when childlike elements like a large plush doll appears in lieu of an actor.

"Wizards Beyond Waverly Place" pays homage to the original series while carving its own identity through unique storylines, fresh characters, and memorable hijinks. It reinforces themes of family values, responsibilities, staying true to oneself and the unwavering power of magic.

The first episodes of "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place" premiered on October 29 on the Disney Channel, with new episodes released weekly. The series also streams on Disney+ a day after the TV broadcast.
