Territory (2024) - Series Review

'Territory', a new six-part series on Netflix, beckons audiences with its intriguing blend of American and Australian influences. The show has a distinctly Australian flavor, bearing resemblance to popular drama Yellowstone but with unique twists including Australian slang, cattle ranching jargon, and spectacular Australian landscapes.

The star-studded cast boasts recognizable faces such as Robert Taylor (Longmire), Anna Torv (Fringe), Jay Ryan (the CW's Beauty & the Beast), and Michael Dorman (Patriot). These actors draw in viewers who love familiarity but also appreciate nuanced performances.

The story shadows the Lawsons, a family who operates the Marianne Station, considered the largest cattle ranch in the world. Family conflicts and power vacuums arise following the death of Daniel, the younger son who inherited the station from the abusive patriarch Colin. A range of characters, from vindictive mining magnates to local Indigenous communities, further complicate the plot.

Territory (2024) - Series Review

Despite its conventional dialogues and predictable twists, Territory's dedication to genre tropes is seen as sincere by the audience. It skillfully blends the themes of family, land, and legacy into its narrative. In addition, Territory gives a concerted attempt to represent the Indigenous perspective, making it noteworthy compared to similar dramas.

The director's excessive use of drone shots of the Outback invokes the feeling of awe in the viewers. The series doesn’t aim to revolutionize the visual language of cinema but stands out for its commitment to awe-inspiring visuals and straightforward storytelling.

'Territory' packs a lot into a six-part series. From death, betrayal, intense business maneuvering, to a unique blend of cultural peculiarities, the series gives viewers a chunky slice of entertainment. With its worn-out hats and diversified cattle, the drama promises a fair share of everything viewers may be looking for in a TV drama.
