Civil War (2024) - Movie Review

Alex Garland has once again surprised audiences with the premiere of his latest creation, "Civil War", a film that strays far from expectations to generate intense debate. This thought-provoking piece shapes itself not as an alternative projection of a divided United States or a spectacle airing high-intensity violence, but as an exploration of journalistic ethics set amidst the collapse of a nation, echoing classic movies like "The Year of Living Dangerously" and "Under Fire".

"Civil War" stands apart from anything Garland, or indeed anyone else, has ever crafted. It presents itself as a study of the psyche of hardcore reporters, those whose goal is not to interpret reality but to deliver the facts first, regardless of the means. Their pursuit of an exclusive story, irrespective of the political implications or human costs, forms the backbone of this inventive narrative.

The story of "Civil War" revolves around four journalists navigating violent clashes between police and opposition forces. The team includes a Pulitzer-hunting photojournalist named Lee, a reporter named Joel, and an older journalist, Sammy. They are joined by Jessie, the young and bright mentee of Lee. Their collective mission sees them undertaking a dangerous journey to interview the soon-to-resign President, amidst the crumbling United States.

Critiqued heavily based on its trailer, the actual film exhibits a more politically self-aware narrative |an the early assumptions suggested. It remains elusive and compelling without explicitly prescribing perspectives on the contemporary political landscape.

Civil War (2024) - Movie Review

"Civil War" is less about diagnosing the ailments of the United States, but more about unearthing the ethos of journalism amidst chaos. It foregrounds the relentless pursuit of story over the reporter's stance on political ideologies. Garland, a master storyteller himself, ensures that this intricate tapestry of journalism is accurately portrayed in "Civil War".

Garland's work, often considered science fiction, strays into the realm of speculative fiction with "Civil War". However, above all else, it is a story that uncovers the intensity and danger routinely faced by journalists embedded deep within turmoil, wading through ethical, moral, and physical challenges.

The narrative carries the audience towards an awful climax that embodies all the themes of "Civil War", ending with a moment of profound self-realization for the characters that may resonate long after the film's end. This film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and will release in cinemas on April 12th.
