Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with These Great Movies

Hispanic cinema has given the globe key cultural landmarks for years, despite a historical paucity of representation.

Here is a list of some movies you can watch

Frida

Salma Hayek received an Oscar nomination in 2002 for her convincing portrayal of the famous surrealist artist Frida Kahlo. The biographical Hispanic film follows Kahlo's life from the tragic accident she suffered at the age of 18 that left her with lifelong suffering to her ascent to fame for her enigmatic yet recognizable paintings.

The focus of the movie is also on Frida's turbulent union with renowned Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Your eyes will be drawn to the screen as the movie's themes echo those of Frida's passionate and melancholy paintings.

Coco

Your heart will be in your throat as you sing along to this lovely animated musical. The story of Miguel, a 12-year-old child who is dragged to the underworld, is based on themes of Dia de los Muertos and breaking generational curses.

He runs into Ernesto, the musician's great-great-grandfather, who assists in reconciling him with his living relatives and lifting the musician ban. In 2018, Coco won two Oscars.

Bajo la Misma Luna/Under the Same Moon

In this heartwarming movie, a young woman named Rosario travels to the border between the United States and Mexico while leaving her small son Carlitos behind. Carlitos flees from his ungrateful aunt and uncle after his grandmother dies so they may keep the money Rosario provides him each month.

Carlitos begins his own search for his mother by perilously entering the United States. The two main themes, love and tenacity, illustrate the Hispanic belief system.
