My Penguin Friend (2024) - Movie Review

“My Penguin Friend” is a charming family film that leaves behind all that’s snarky and self-referential for an earnest and emotionally gripping narrative. Directed by David Schurmann, the movie is based on the true story of an extraordinary relationship between a penguin and a fisherman named João. Year after year, the penguin makes a long migration from Patagonia, Argentina, to Ilha Grande in Brazil, reuniting with the fisherman every June.

The storyline follows João, portrayed by Jean Reno, a humble fisherman carrying a heavy burden of loss. His life takes a turn with the unexpected arrival of the penguin, adding a different dynamic to João's life and enticing the audience with Reno's heartwarming performance. Adriana Barraza gives a riveting performance as João’s wife Maria, providing stability through the story’s emotional turbulence.

My Penguin Friend (2024) - Movie Review

The penguin, named 'DinDim' by a local child, steals the show with its adorable antics. The fact that real penguins are featured, instead of CGI creations, adds authenticity and warmth to the narrative. Proving that the movie appeals to audiences young and old, children will love DinDim’s playful energy, while adults can admire the film's exceptional craft.

However, the film’s richness is slightly marred by cut-aways to mundane scenes of scientists studying penguins in Patagonia artificially crowbarred into the narrative. Despite the occasional lull in the storytelling, the unaffected bond between João and DinDim captivates viewers. Themes of loss, recovery, and friendship are delivered in emotionally compelling scenes that are bound to touch the hearts of the audience, making "My Penguin Friend" a must-watch for all.
