Starz and Channel 4's newest drama, "The Couple Next Door", introduces Pete and Evie, a pair navigating their new suburban lifestyle in Leeds. The show is initially presented as a British ode to "Desperate Housewives", but diverts from this comparison as it delves into the exploration of a modern polyamorous relationship.
This six-part series is adapted from the Dutch series "Nieuwe Buren". While the show tries to intrigue its viewers with a twisty thriller narrative around this unusual relationship, it falls short on delivery. Much could have been done in terms of sexual tension between the characters or at least, some profound commentary on the dynamics of polyamory, but none of this is achieved. Moreover, the potential themes of religious fundamentalism, male infertility, or romantic obsession are not adequately addressed.
When the show focuses on the couples and their bubbling curiosity for each other, it offers some enjoyable moments, albeit with less raunchiness than fans of Starz might expect. The four key characters, portrayed by Alfred Enoch, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica De Gouw, and Sam Heughan, manage to keep the show watchable - if only just.
Instead of concentrating on the main theme, the drama is padded out with poorly executed thriller elements. A subplot featuring a sleazy neighbor and his miserable wife, and another involving a corrupt local businessman, fail to engage viewers. As the show progresses, these elements increasingly dominate the narrative, turning the drama into an underwhelming viewing experience.
Despite its shortcomings, the show has already been renewed for a second season. The original cast will not be returning, which might be an indication that viewer interest in the initial storylines is fading. Only time will tell if "The Couple Next Door" can evolve to charm its audience in its subsequent rendition.
