Women in Blue (2024) - Series Review
- Aug 4, 2024
Apple TV's series "Women in Blue", also known as "Las Azules", may not be a flawless creation. The performance of the cast tends to fluctuate, with some actors overemphasizing their character’s drama as common in telenovelas, while others placing their feet in realistic drama. Critics have pointed out that a male-dominated production and directing team, led by Fernando Rovzar and Pablo Aramendi, has led to a surface-level portrayal of women. The episodes mostly are directed and scripted by men, featuring stereotypical portrayal of femininity and underscoring deep-seated gender roles. The protagonist, María (Bárbara Mori), is an attractive housewife who embarks on a career journey after discovering her husband's infidelity. But such cliched beginnings do not serve the profound gender dynamics that the series had the potential to discuss, considering its subject matter – the integration of women into Mexico's police force in the 1970s. Despite its shortcomings, "Women in Blue" captivates viewers with its engrossing blend of genre elements, compelling its audience to follow the titular “Women in Blue” as they use their police training to hunt down a serial killer targeting women. Borrowing from “Silence of the Lambs”, María seeks advice from an infamous imprisoned serial killer, adding to the tension.
