Alien: Romulus (2024) - Movie Review

Film critics and enthusiasts alike are commending "Alien: Romulus", Fede Alvarez's installment in the "Alien" franchise. The movie has been lauded for its terrifying scenes, impactful real-world effects, and compelling cast. Many believe that Alvarez's effort is among the franchise's best, which spans 45 years, beginning with Ridley Scott's seminal "Alien" in 1979.

The plot of "Alien: Romulus" twists and turns through six previous "Alien" movies, culminating in a thrilling, action-packed adventure. Germain Lussier from Gizmodo dodged that the film escalates towards the end, culminating in a jaw-dropping final act.

"Alien: Romulus'" sound design, and world-building were highlighted by Variety's Jazz Tangcay, who thought the practical effects were so impressive they haunted his dreams. Courtney Howard termed it as "gnarly, gripping & gorgeously bleak," filled with ingenious, strong content, subtly appealing greatest hits.

Tessa Smith, from Mama's Geeky, applauded the movie for honouring the originals, particularly through practical effects. The CGI, in contrast, stood out when used, but the slow-burning start escalates into non-stop tension.

"Alien: Romulus", produced by Scott, is set between "Alien" (1979) and James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986). The plot revolves around a group of youthful space colonists who unknowingly venture into a derelict space station that is infested by the titular creature.

Several responses praised the performances of Jonsson and Spaeny in this installment. However, while the film's third act was lauded, some felt the movie faltered towards the end, particularly Mark McPherson who said thematic elements were somewhat misplaced by the final act.

Nonetheless, the film is filled with horror elements, vibrant imagery, and remarkable creature design. While it huddle together the best of the franchise, some critics observde that it fell short of developing its own uniqueness and the characters were forgettable.

Scott stepped back from the director's chair this time, but guided Alvarez in fleshing out the story for "Alien: Romulus". According to Scott, Alvarez brought a surge of energy to bring new life into the franchise.

"Alien: Romulus" is set to be released in cinemas across the country on 16th April. First reaction to the film has been overwhelmingly positive.
