A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) — Movie Review

The horror movie A Quiet Place: Day One takes its story of survival in a silent alien invasion from a small town to the noisy, heavily populated New York City. The Big Apple's typical noise level of 90 decibels, equivalent to a human scream, sets the scene for a gripping experience that capably extends this compelling franchise.

In her starring role, Lupita Nyong'o gives a captivating lead performance as Samira, a woman trying to stay alive despite her terminal illness. Successfully maneuvering within the demands of the genre, writer-director Michael Sarnoski creates an uncommon blend of tension, scares, and emotional investment while borrowing elements that had previously amplified his 2021 movie, Pig.

Peeling back to the beginning of the alien invasion, the movie mirrors the pandemonium from John Krasinski’s 2018 hit, A Quiet Place and its 2021 sequel, A Quiet Place Part 2. The alien predators who respond only to sound take over the city, causing chaos and confusion. People attempting to escape south are occasionally caught and massacred when they produce any noise. Samira, who is determined to reach her old home in Harlem, struggles against the wave of terrified and stunned New Yorkers.

The visuals of New York being overtaken by vicious aliens, buildings scarred and streets lined with burning cars and demolished storefronts, impresses greatly. The spectacle of usually loud New York being shocked into deathly silence heightens the fear factor.

Introduced later in the proceedings is Eric (Joseph Quinn), a young law student from England. He is found petrified in a flooded subway stairway by Samira's service cat Frodo and is led back to her. Samira, unlike the general gender roles in disaster movies, comes off as the hardened, unsentimental figure while Eric initially appears shaken and vulnerable. They eventually form a bond, and as Samira's condition deteriorates, Eric shows surprising courage.

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) — Movie Review

The movie utilises New York's locales impressively, turning places typically associated with comfort into death traps. Notably, a nerve-wracking sequence in a flooded subway station where Samira and Eric escape a predator alien will stay with the audience.

The character development is paced out effectively throughout the movie and by the climax, Samira and Eric emerge as layered characters. The chemistry between the actors adds a potent impact to their final scenes. The actors Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou also bring depth to their respective characters.

Aside from the commendable performances, the film's other standout aspect is Frodo, played by two similarly marked cats Nico and Schnitzel. Frodo's affectionate, sometimes daringly curious character adds additional dimensions to the story.

Sarnoski succeeds in presenting a spin-off that fits the narrative rules of the preceding two films while expanding the vertigo and suspense on a larger canvas. He refrains from detailing too much, creating a more atmospheric terror in this feature.

Rather rare in its genre, this post-apocalyptic story deeply engages its audience with not only its scares but also the lingering emotion and understanding about human loss. The third installment of A Quiet Place convincingly demonstrates that the frightening, smart series is far from being exhausted.
