How to Build a Compost Bin in Your Backyard

You will require:

  • Rake or spade
  • Strong wire
  • Strong wooden pallets (4)
  • Sledgehammer
  • Sturdy wooden
  • Bow saw
  • Stakes (6)

Step1

The compost bin must be set up on the bare ground, not paved. Clear the location where the bin will go, and if necessary, use a spade or rake to level the ground. If you are concerned that rats will get in, add a base made of chicken wire.

Step 2

Place a pallet on its long edge to create the compost bin's back edge. Sledgehammer the stakes deeply into the ground, about 20 to 30 cm below the surface, by driving them through the two layers of a pallet at either end.

Step 3

To prevent the compost from overflowing through the gaps, put the corners of the two remaining pallets closely together to form the sides at a right angle to the first. As in step 2, secure in place by driving stakes into each corner.

Step 4

Cord the pallets around each corner to maintain structural stability. Use a bow saw to shape the stakes' tops.

Step 5

Start to fill your compost bin with yard and kitchen garbage, and then attach the final pallet of the front line of the right-side pallet to create a gate you can open to access the compost.
