Which Pet?
The first step to adopting a pet is to do your research into what pet would be a good match. For example, even if you know that you want a dog, there are many different breeds in a range of sizes and temperaments. Think how much time you can devote to walking it everyday, as some dogs need more exercise than others.
Visit the Animal Shelter
Once you have some ideas, head to your local shelter to meet some potential matches. Take your time going around the cages and interact with the animals where possible so that you both get to know each other. Ask the staff any questions you think of so that you have all the information you need.
Home Visit
Once you have selected a possible match, most reputable shelters will insist on doing a home visit. This to ensure that you have been honest on your application, have the space needed and that it is a suitable place for the animal to live. Don’t be put off by this step – it just means that they are doing their job and keeping animals safe.
Prepare for the Arrival
Whatever pet you are getting, it's bound to need a lot of stuff! Make sure this will be ready before the arrival of the animal. For example, you might need water and food bowls, a bed of some sort and some food ready to serve.
Adoption
Finally, you can take your new pet home! Bear in mind that the change in environment can be stressful for them, so make sure they have a safe place to go and you are on hand to calm them, but give them their space if they prefer.
